How many people earn $100k a year?
Income odds for men and women · Last updated: September 19, 2026
About 1 in 5 American men and 1 in 7 women earn $100,000 or more a year, according to the income model our calculator uses. Raise that bar to $200,000 and the pool of men shrinks by about two-thirds.

What stands out
- The typical man earns about $45,000 and the typical woman about $33,000. Those are medians — half earn more, half earn less — so any minimum above them rules out most people.
- $100,000 is roughly the top fifth of men.
- Each step up costs more than it looks. Going from $100,000 to $150,000 roughly halves the share of men who qualify, and at $250,000 it’s about 1 in 25.
- Seven-figure earners are about 1 man in 1,000.
How these numbers are worked out
Incomes aren’t spread out evenly — lots of people earn modest amounts and a few earn a great deal — so the calculator models them with a log-normal curve, the standard shape for income. It’s fitted to median personal income from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey ($45,000 for men, $33,000 for women) and calibrated so the very top lands near real top-earner rates.
This is personal income before tax, not household income, and it comes from a model rather than a head count — most reliable around the middle and least precise at the very top. It also covers all adults, so it doesn’t adjust for age: people in their twenties typically earn less than this curve suggests, and people in their forties and fifties earn more.
Income is one of several standards the calculator combines. See how the odds are calculated, or height odds for the other one people ask about most.
