What stands out
- 5′9″ is the middle. Half of men are 5′9″ or taller and half are shorter, so any minimum above 5′9″ rules out most men.
- From 6 feet up, each inch roughly halves the pool. 16% of men are 6′0″ or taller, 9.1% are 6′1″ or taller, 4.8% are 6′2″ and 2.3% are 6′3″.
- 6′4″ is about 1 man in 100.
- For women, 5′8″ is already uncommon. About 1 woman in 17 is 5′8″ or taller, and a 6-foot woman is closer to 1 in 750.
How these numbers are worked out
Adult height follows a bell curve closely, so the calculator models it as one: an average of 5′9″ for men with a standard deviation of 3 inches, and about 5′3½″ for women with a standard deviation of 2.8 inches, based on CDC/NCHS body-measurement data (NHANES).
These are estimates from a statistical model, not a head count. They’re most accurate near the average and least precise at the extremes, so treat the very tall end of the table as a ballpark rather than an exact figure.
